Jerky's Gourmet - Craft Beer

Jerky's Gourmet is a new brand of jerky, founded by Tim Gerstman and Andria Taylor, based out of San Diego, CA. Gerstman, who transplated to San Diego from the East Coast 8 years ago, met Andria who also happened to love beef jerky. The two joined forces and launched Jerky's Gourmet.

The pair can be found at farmers markets across the San Diego area doling out taste samples. Their jerky is also sold at various stores and shops across town, and also sell from their website.

This "Craft Beer" jerky is part of their "Top Shelf Line" of alcohol-infused jerky, and was inspired by San Diego's love of craft beer. According to Jerky's Gourmet, "It packs a bold punch of traditional spices and, of course, lots of premium beer. We use the best domestic pale ale in our marinade to bring the on-tap flavor of hops and barley that will make your mouth water!"

People's Choice Beef Jerky - Cowboy Peppered

People's Choice Beef Jerky recently introduced a new flavor, "Cowboy Peppered". It launched in October 2017.

People's Choice Beef Jerky is a brand of People's Sausage Company, Inc. based out of Los Angeles, CA. It's a family-run business that's been around since 1929.

This new Cowboy Peppered variety is part of the company's "Tasting Kitchen" series, which is a line of jerky that mixes bold, eclectic ingredients, with the old fashioned style of making jerky. The company says this Cowboy Peppered is, "...for those that love the rich and bold flavor of coarse black pepper ... married with slight sweetness of sugar and the richness of Worcestershire sauce."

Jerky's Gourmet - Habanero Sculpin

Jerky's Gourmet is a new brand of jerky, founded by Tim Gerstman and Andria Taylor, based out of San Diego, CA. Gerstman, who transplated to San Diego from the East Coast 8 years ago, met Andria who also happened to love beef jerky. The two joined forces and launched Jerky's Gourmet.

Their jerky is sold at various shops, bars, and venues across the San Diego area. However the two can be found at the Little Italy Farmers Market on Saturdays, doling out samples of their jerky.

Habanero Sculpin also happens to be the name of a craft beer made by Ballast Point Brewing, another San Diego business. This jerky is marinated for 24 hours in this brew, creating a one-two punch of habanero spices and "subtle hoppy notes" on the tongue.

Wicked Cutz Beef Jerky - Orange Teriyaki

Orange Teriyaki is a new flavor from Wicked Cutz Beef Jerky. We reviewed the company's three original flavors last year (see the reviews).

Wicked Cutz was launched by Branch Warren, a well-known body builder who has won numerous competitions over past couple of decades. Warren also owns other companies that market apparel and body building supplements. Warren's move into beef jerky touches upon his heritage in the Texas cattle industry going back 150 years. He grew up on a cattle ranch and in his youth spent time as a ranch hand before moving on to body-building. Now in his retirement, he sought to start his own jerky brand and touch upon his cattlemen roots.

This Orange Teriyaki is described by the company as, "sweet & tangy and smoothly transitions into a subtle yet exciting spicy kick", going on to say that it has a, "citrus aroma", and a "savory and appetizing scent".

Homegrown Meats Beef Jerky - Cracked Black Pepper

Homegrown Meats is a brand that launched in 2011, owned by a group of ranchers who've farmed the Palomar Mountain area of Southern California going back into the mid-1800s. They began marketing their steaks and cuts of beef to Whole Foods Markets shortly thereafter.

In 2016, they launched a line of jerky, and Whole Foods Market picked it up only for their Southern California market. However, in October 2018, Whole Foods announced it would begin selling Homegrown Meats Jerky nationwide, with a four of the company's specialized flavors, "Joel's Traditional", "Cracked Black Pepper", "Western Mesquite Barbecue", and "Paleo". The jerky is marked as, "gluten free" and "certified grass fed".

This Cracked Black Pepper variety, according Homegrown Meats, is described as being, "simple and straightforward", going on to say that it's made with, "coarse-cracked black pepper and that perfect touch of brown sugar".

Smokehouse Jerky Co - Smoky Bar-B

Smokehouse Jerky Co. is a brand of Tender Heifer Snack Co., based out of Beaumont, CA. It was started in 2008, and is currently run by a husband and wife team, Franco Fonseca and Patti Fonseca.

The company takes pride in its beef brisket-based jerky, using meat sourced from California. They add no MSG and no preservatives, and focus on small batches at a time.

This "Smoky Bar-B" variety is described by Smokehouse Jerky Co as, "Great taste of mesquite smoked meat with no after taste, just great flavor and tenderness."

Savage Jerky

Savage Jerky Co. is a new brand of jerky produced by Brad and Michelle Summey out of Washington DC. We previously reviewed their jerky under the name "Brave Jerky" while they were still in fundraising mode.

We're re-reviewing the jerky based on the new name and packaging, and since their jerky is now shipping, we can assign ratings.

Savage Jerky is based on a unique Cuban marinade recipe that mixes together garlic, lime, and cilantro. Currently, they are shipping four varieties, Mojo, Mojo Jalerrano, Mojo Habanero, and Ghost Pepper Buffalo.

Kratos Beef Sticks - Original

Kratos, the brand of beef bars we reviewed a few years ago, recently introduced a new line of beef sticks.

Kratos is a brand owned by QuarterShare International, LLC, based in Tulsa, OK. The parent company happens to sell a line of meat sticks under the QuarterShare name, but are not 100% beef.

These new sticks from Kratos, however, are 100% beef, and made with a different recipe. The beef was raised without added hormones, no antibiotics, vegetarian fed, and minimally processed. The beef used is also "GAP Step 1" (Global Animal Partnership). These sticks are also stamped as "Certified Gluten Free".

Ayoba-Yo - Droëwors

Ayoba-Yo is a brand of biltong and droëwors owned by Ayoba-Yo USA, based out of Oakton, VA. The brand got started in 2013.

Co-founded by Wian van Blommestein, Ayoba-Yo is a family run business that focuses on South African-style meat snacks. Made in a USDA-inspected facility, the company's biltong and droëwors is made from top round and spiced with an old family recipe. It's free of artificial ingredients and preservatives.

Droëwors is a style of sausage originating from South Africa, using ingredients similar to biltong, and is more dry than American-style meat sticks.

Northwest Bierhaus Jerky - Dark Ale

Northwest Bierhaus Jerky is a brand owned by GJ Products, based out of Clackamas, OR. It's run by Glenn Loehr who started it in 2015.

The company also owns, "Oregon Wine Country Jerky". Together, the two brands infuse the flavors of craft beer and wine from the Pacific Northwest, and target the tourist and gift basket markets.

This, "Dark Ale" variety is described by the company as combining the, "hearty dark ale with mouth-watering premium beef", and says that jerky snackers will love the "high quality nutty flavor".

Astro Fresh Jerky - Buffalo Chicken Wing

Astro Fresh Jerky is a brand owned by HJP Trading, LLC based out of Los Angeles, CA. It was started by Roy Park in early 2015 who found an old family recipe that dated back to the late 1980s.

Since then, Roy has been selling his jerky in local markets and retailers in California. Recently they started a website and are now taking online orders.

This Buffalo Chicken Wing is a chicken jerky.

Kingmade Jerky - Classic Recipe

Kingmade Jerky is a brand that hit the market in 2013, launched by Jeff King, and based out of McKinney, TX. King had been working as a golf caddie for many years, with a hobby in making homemade jerky.

After bringing some batches of his jerky to the golf course, his fellow golfers liked it a lot, and kept asking him for more. It was only a few years later that big names like Tiger Woods, Graeme McDowell, Brandt Snedeker, Davis Love III, Rickie Fowler and Billy Horschel, among others, began buying jerky from him. Today, King has gone full corporate and now sells jerky to major retail outlets across the country.

This "Classic Recipe" is described as being made from flank steak, and seasoned with steakhouse spices, brown sugar, and is touted as the lowest sodium beef jerky on the market.

Jerky Dynasty - Black Pepper

Jerky Dynasty is a brand started by Chris Miller. It actually started a few years ago as an online retailer of jerky, offering brands like Lawless Jerky, Jeff's Famous Jerky, and others. Recently, the company launched its own line of jerky aptly named, "Jerky Dynasty".

According to Chris, Jerky Dynasty is "old fashioned", clarifying that it's hand cut, hung in a smoke house, with no liquid smoke.

This Black Pepper variety is described by the company simply as, "mouth-watering good".

Country Archer Jerky - Mango Habanero

Country Archer Jerky is a well known brand in the meat snack industry, going back to 1977 when it became the private labeler for hundreds of brands over the decades. Now based in San Bernardino, CA, the company is leveraging its own brand and pushing its own line of jerky into stores across the country.

As the jerky market has migrated towards preservative-free, natural ingredients, so has Country Archer. The company claims it's jerky is handcrafted, made in small batches, using all natural ingredients.

This Mango Habanero flavor is described as a being, "...a sweeter, more sophisticated way to spice things up."

This Salt & Pepper variety is one of three flavors they currently offer. The company doesn't market any kind of claims as to what one might expect other than just "salt and pepper".

Jeff's Famous Jerky - Jamaican Jerk

Jeff's Famous Jerky recently released this new flavor, Jamaican Jerk. Based out of Mission Viejo, CA, Jeff's Famous Jerky is a brand owned by Jeff's Famous Foods, Inc.

The company started up in 2010 when Jeff Richards decided to make a business from his favorite snack food, jerky. Since the 1970s, Richards has been making his own jerky, getting better year after year, similar to like a 40-year old bourbon. Professionally, Richards has spent his career in the restaurant business and also coaches entrepreneurs through a consulting business.

This Jamaican Jerk variety is described as being made from, "authentic Jamaican Jerk Sauce and their famous Scotch Bonnet Pepper", going on to say that it's a limited edition flavor because its so difficult to import the Jamaican Jerk sauce.

Legacy Meats - Wicked Awesome

Legacy Meats is a family-run meat-distribution business located in Kersey, Colorado. Ben Elliott, who built a career raising cattle, launched this business in 2012 when the trend for buying locally-sourced foods gained traction. Last year, Ben and wife opened up a store in Kersey.

Legacy Meats supplies grass-fed steaks and chops to local customers, but has built a following across the world. Recently, they added beef jerky to their product line up. You can purchase jerky packages individually, or through their own Jerky subscription program.

This Wicked Awesome variety is described by them as delivering, "delivers slow heat that builds the more you eat", going on to say that it has, "wicked flavor".
