Jeff's Famous Jerky - Jamaican Jerk

jeffs famous jerky
Jeff's Famous Jerky recently released this new flavor, Jamaican Jerk. Based out of Mission Viejo, CA, Jeff's Famous Jerky is a brand owned by Jeff's Famous Foods, Inc.

The company started up in 2010 when Jeff Richards decided to make a business from his favorite snack food, jerky. Since the 1970s, Richards has been making his own jerky, getting better year after year, similar to like a 40-year old bourbon. Professionally, Richards has spent his career in the restaurant business and also coaches entrepreneurs through a consulting business.

This Jamaican Jerk variety is described as being made from, "authentic Jamaican Jerk Sauce and their famous Scotch Bonnet Pepper", going on to say that it's a limited edition flavor because its so difficult to import the Jamaican Jerk sauce.

Ingredients

Beef, brown sugar, soy sauce, worcestershire suace, jerk seasoning, rice vinegar, balsamic vinegar, cayenne pepper natural smoke flavoring, granulated garlic, granulated onion, cumin, fresh garlic, scotch bonnet pepper sauce

Review

The first flavor that hits right away is a strong sweet, followed by a light salt, and a heavy seasoning. The scotch bonnet pepper flavor comes in, along with a fair amount of heat. The chewing bursts out a tanginess along with a light fruity character, and the natural meat flavors towards the end. There's a lingering garlic and onion in the background.

For being marketed as as Jamaican style, with an emphasis on Scotch Bonnet peppers, this jerky really hits the mark. I do get that heavy seasoning blend that Jamaican style cuisine is known for, but I also get a fruity, tangy flavor that one expects from Caribbean cooking. The Scotch Bonnet peppers, which Jamaica is famous for, adds a noticeable punch to this jerky with its fruity flavor, but also a moderate level of heat. It's not a seething hot burn, but toned down for non-stop snacking purposes. It rates a "medium" on our heat scale (3/5).

Otherwise, the primary taste profile is a well-seasoned steak sauce, savory, with a fair amount of sweet, but also a good deal of fruity, tropical flavors. The flavor and heat of Scotch Bonnet peppers is laden over that, along with a lingering garlic and onion back flavor, and finally the natural meat flavors at the end.

The meat consistency is excellent. This is a semi-moist, and tender jerky cut from what appears to be beef brisket. The initial bite is soft yet meaty, and once chewed down it feels almost like filet-mignon cooked medium rare. I didn't find any stringiness or unchewable tissues.

Verdict

This Jamaican Jerk variety from Jeff's Famous Jerky goes all in with an explosion of flavors that hit all areas of the palate, just as you would expect form Jamaican style cuisine. It's has a lot of sweet, but also a lot of tangy, fruity flavors, and a good dose of spices and seasonings. It's also savory with its saucy marinade, and beefy with its tender, meaty chewing. Moreover, the rich flavor of Scotch Bonnet peppers comes through well in this and adds a moderate level of heat. But this isn't just a mish-mash of ingredients, it tastes like its crafted to lure you in with an initial sweet, slowly introduce the spices and marinade, then burst out the tangy, fruity and chile character. Jeff's Famous Jerky is known for its complex recipes and delicate balance of flavors, and has once against created a jerky that attacks all areas of the tongue like a Michelangelo at a Las Vegas buffet.
