Pony Express Jerky - Original Hickory Smoked

Pony Express Jerky is a brand owned by Pony Express Enterprises based out of New Holland, PA. The brand was started in 2009 by Ted Cundiff, a veteran of the meat snack industry. Cundiff originally launched Wild Bill's Beef Jerky in 1983, a brand that was bought up by Monogram Foods in 2009.

Pony Express is manufactured in its own USDA inspected facility in New Holland, right in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country. The company offers a retail location in Blue Ball, PA.

This "Original Hickory Smoked" is the brand's flagship flavor, and is offered in two meat styles, this smaller cut style reviewed here, and a longer strip style sold in one-pound packages (which we will review later).

Well Food Company is a brand of sports snacks that originally launched in 2009 as Paleo Brands Inc. It was started by John Welbourn, former offensive tackle with the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, as well as his friend Joe Cappucio, founder of Del Mar Seafoods.

These Carne Bars is a chopped and formed beef snack that come in two varieties: Coconut and Berry. Well Food Company describes the Carne Bar as, "the ULTIMATE Paleo Protein Bar". They're made from grass-fed beef, no preservatives, and are gluten-free.

Crunchy Cow Beef Jerky is a brand owned by Elemental Edibles, LC based out of St. Louis, MO. It was started by Brian Gilbert in 2015, who describes himself as a life-long cook and aspiring entrepreneur.

Brian had worked for several talented chefs and business owners, honing his skills in culinary arts and business. It was during his stint as a B2B salesman, that he started making jerky as a hobby, and finally, the idea for this new company clicked. Crunchy Cow Beef Jerky focuses on using high quality ingredients, natural grass-fed, pasture-raised beef, with no artificial ingredients, preservatives, nitrates, additives, steroids, antibiotics, or added hormones. Brian makes all the jerky himself from a USDA inspected kitchen at Saint Louis University's Fresh Gatherings Cafe.

This "Sweet Southern BBQ" is described by Brian as having a hint of hickory smoke that screams "BBQ", while the all-natural honey, brown sugar, and turbinado sugar reaches "down south" to "slap you right in the tastebuds".

I found this package at a Grocery Outlet in San Diego, CA. Grocery Outlet is primarily a liquidator that buys up overstock and unsold inventory. This particular package still has another 19 months to go before it's "Sell by" date.

Otherwise, the parent company, doesn't really have a website for its Mountain Man line of meat snacks, and the label itself doesn't make any marketing claims aside from being, "Spicy" and "Kippered".
