The Patriot Brands Jerky - Blood of Patrons

the patriot brands jerky
The Patriot Brands Beef Jerky is a new brand that launched in February of 2018 by James Napier of Cuba, MO. The company also markets a line of hot sauces under the same brand.

Napier seems well-known and well-liked by many as a patriot with his beard dyed red, white, and blue. The name "Patriot Brands" stems from his overwhelming support of the United States and the people who have fought for it. He's associated with "The Patriot Church", a congregation also based out of Cuba, MO.

This "Blood of Patrons" flavor is a Bloody Mary flavored jerky, and is described by the company as, "...celery salt with garlic flavor with fantastic American beef with some horseradish finish".

Ingredients

Beef, salt, tomato powder, dextrose, red pepper, whole and ground celery seed, spices (including mustard), horseradish powder, dehydrated garlic and onion, sugar, sodium bicarbonate, vinegar powder, citric acid, lemon oil, sodium nitrite

Review

The first flavor that hits the tongue is celery seed, followed by a light salt, and a garlic-onion seasoning. There's just a touch of sweet. The chewing brings on a light dehydrated bell pepper, along with notes of horseradish flavor. Slowly, there's a tomatoey flavor that builds. There's a spicy heat to this, but I think comes from the horseradish.

For being described as a Bloody Mary inspired jerky, it actually does have flavors reminiscent of the famed Breakfast of Champions, mostly as the spices found in a Bloody Mary Mix, as well as seasonings used to rim the glass. It also has a tomatoey base whose flavor sits behind the scenes and allows the spices and seasonings have all the attention. The level of spiciness in this rates a "mild-medium" on our heat scale (level 2/5).

Otherwise, the primary taste profile is a light tomato base, sweetened slightly, seasoned mostly with celery seed, but with lighter levels of salt, garlic, onion, and horseradish.

The chewing texture is tender, yet lightly chewy. It starts out meaty, somewhat rubbery, but eventually chews down into something steak-like. I do see some pieces with light fatty streaks, and I did encounter some unchewable tissues, but overall good.

Verdict

This Blood of Patrons beef jerky from The Patriot Brands delivers many of the flavors and spices found in a Bloody Mary Mix, starting primarily with a tomatoey base marinade, and seasoned largely by celery seed but flanked with salt, garlic, onion, and horseradish. It even has a little bit of horseradish heat, but not hot to any significant degree. The flavor is more like the concentrated mix of tomato juice and spices found at the bottom of a glass of Bloody Mary, where you get that extra horseradish and spices. The meat itself remains tender yet chewy, maybe a bit rubbery, but eventually takes on a steak-like texture. It's perhaps a great way to start off your Sunday morning hangover while trying to fix yourself some hash browns and eggs.

Rating: Good (4/5)
