Chew On This Jerky - Teriyaki

chew on this jerky
Chew On This Jerky is a new brand of jerky launched in April 2018 by Eric Bowlus and Grace Bowlus, based out of Corona, CA.

Veteran-owned and operated, the Bowlus' history in craft jerky goes back over 40 years working in the food manufacturing industry. Eric began making jerky as a hobby just within the last five. After a couple of years making dehydrated meats, he decided to turn it into a business.

This Teriyaki variety comes with no other claims or description other than "teriyaki".

Ingredient

Beef, teriyaki sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, pineapple juice, worcestershire sauce, garlic

Review

The first flavors that I identify is a light salt and a light "meaty" character. Soy sauce starts to come in more clearly, while the sweetness starts to increase. The chewing brings on something closer to teriyaki. There's hints of garlic in the background.

For being marketed as "Teriyaki" this has the soy sauce savory quality, and little bit of the sweet, along with faint levels of fermented flavor. The sweetness is much more light than a traditional Japanese-style teriyaki, and I don't pick up any of the ginger that one usually expects. It's more of a soy sauce-weighted teriyaki interpretation.

Otherwise, the primary taste profile is soy sauce with a light sweet, hints of garlic, and touches of fruit in the background. The natural meat flavors come in light.

The meat consistency is excellent. These are soft, tender strips of meat that chew easily and burst with flavor. Only small amounts of fat are noted, and little stringiness. Once chewed down, they take on a meaty texture but closer chewing like soft prime rib.

Verdict

This Teriyaki variety from Chew On This Jerky offers up a traditional teriyaki jerky flavor in a soft, meaty chewing texture suitable for all genres of meat snack lovers. You get a soy sauce-forward marinade that goes a little more light on the sweet. Though I didn't really pick up enough of the ginger and wine ferment, it actually goes one-up over the domestic brands of teriyaki jerky by giving you a softer, meatier chew. It's quite tender, and mimics the texture of a 12 ounce of cut of prime rib cooked medium. If you enjoy the flavor of a simple teriyaki meat snack, but want something that chews better, then Chew On This Jerky.
