This Sweet & Spicy beef jerky is claimed to be moderately spicy, and offering "the best of both worlds", sweet and spicy.

Ingredients

Beef, brown sugar, teriyaki sauce, seasoning, granulated garlic, vinegar, onion powder, liquid smoke, sodium nitrite,

Review

The first flavors that hit my palate is a strong sweet, followed soon by a light smoke and a light cayenne spice. The chewing brings on a stronger sweet, while the cayenne adds some flavor, along with a light garlic and onion seasoning.

For being marketed as "Sweet and Spicy" it holds up well. The level of sweet is significant, perhaps dominating the taste buds. But the spiciness is also right on target, generating a cayenne-style heat that registers a "medium" on our heat scale (level 3 out of 5). The sweet contributes a light stickiness on the fingers while the cayenne actually adds a bit of flavor too.

Otherwise, the primary taste profile is a salty, teriyaki sauce with a strong sweet and well-defined cayenne pepper spice. There's a garlic and onion seasoning that sits just a couple rows back and a light smoke in the back row.

The chewing starts out lightly tough, definitely chewy, but softens up with a moderate amount of work. I don't see any fat on these slices, nor do I feel any stringiness. Once chewed down soft, they take a on meaty feel, though a little gummy, and not steak-like. The heavy sweet leaves some stickiness on the fingers.

Verdict

This Sweet & Spicy variety from J&K Beef Jerky hits a home run by delivering a lot of sweet and a good deal of spice. This stuff is like meat candy because of its sugar-forward profile yet it actually is spicy too with a medium-level heat powered by a dose of cayenne pepper. It's actually more of a spicy teriyaki jerky that goes extra sweet and leaves a bit of stickiness on the fingertips. It tends sit a shy over the tough side, and can definitely tire the jaw muscles if you choose to devour an entire 8 ounce bag. Aside from the garlic and onion seasoning, it still has a simple character in terms of complexity and creativity. But overall, this is a snacking jerky meant for baseball games, long haul drives, or other activities where your jaws can work while your mind is focused elsewhere.
