Bakke Brothers Brand - Honey Glazed Beef Jerky

Bakke Brothers Brand
Bakke Brothers Brand is owned by Whiskey Hill Smokehouse, LLC based out of Hubbard, OR. Whiskey Hill also owns The Jerky Hut, as well as its own house brand, Whiskey Hill Smokehouse.

Bakke Brothers was started by Phil Bakke, one of Whiskey Hill'founders. The brand differs from The Jerky Hut in that it's free of preservatives such as sodium nitrite, sodium erythorbate, et al, and it's also gluten-free.

This "Honey Glazed" is described by the brand as, "...flavored by Honey, Smoke, Brown & Maple sugars", going on to say that it's made with, "slices of premium, tender, juicy beef".

Ingredients

Beef, water, honey, brown sugar, sea salt, maple sugar, natural smoke flavoring, celery powder, black pepper, yeast extract

Review

The first flavors that come into view is a light smoke, followed by a light sweet, and touches of salt. The chewing brings on a meaty flavor, along with a bit more sweet. The natural meat flavors make their way in finally, while the light smoke continues.

For being marketed as, "Honey Glazed", it holds well. I do pick up the unique flavor of honey apart from the sweetness, and I do pick up a bit of a caramelized, buttery character too. But overall, the honey flavor is light, and you wouldn't notice it unless you analyzed carefully the flavors as I'm doing now.

Otherwise, the primary taste profile is that of a moderately sweet and smoky, lightly salted, natural meat flavor. It's more like a plain beef jerky but sweetened up for those who prefer sugary meat snacks.

The meat consistency is excellent. These are thick sliced strips of beef. They start out chewy but soften up easily and yet still manage retain a steak-like texture. There's little to no stringiness, and barely any fat noticeable. These are pretty much all meat.

Verdict

This Honey Glazed beef jerky from Bakke Brothers Brand offers just a light flavor of honey with a moderate level of sweetness over a noticeably smoked natural meat flavor. The salt and black pepper are kept nominal, allowing the unique characteristics of beef to shine through. While the honey doesn't add much of its signature flavor, it does add a lighly smooth, creamy texture to the chewing that makes feel buttery. The smoke flavor continues throughout the chewing, and while it's not real wood smoked, this still manages to taste real wood smoked. It's overall mild, and simple in seasonings, but still evokes a sense of chewing something whole, natural, and good.

Rating: Good (4/5)
