People's Choice Beef Jerky - Carne Seca Limon Con Chile

peoples choice beef jerky
People's Choice Beef Jerky is a brand of People's Sausage Company, Inc. based out of Los Angeles, CA. It's a family-run business that's been around since 1929. See our previous reviews of their jerky.

Their "Carne Seca" line of beef jerky is based on the Mexican-style dried beef popular in Latin societies. Being that People's Choice Beef Jerky is located in downtown Los Angeles, they've found a lot of success marketing their line of Carne Seca to local hispanic grocery stores and carnicerias.

The flavors of "Limon" and "Limon con Chile" are made with all natural ingredients, are gluten free, and contain no preservatives.

Ingredients

Beef, water, sea salt, guajillo chili powder, natural spices, cracked red pepper, lemon juice powder, cane sugar, garlic powder.

Review

The first flavors that hit my tongue is a chile pepper flavor with a touch of citrusy tang. A light level of heat starts to build. The lemon flavor becomes more noticeable in the chewing, while the natural meat flavors with a bit of black pepper come out.

For being labeled, "Limon Con Chile", this holds up well. I can pick up a chile pepper flavor right away along with a moderate level of heat. Meanwhile, the chewing brings out a light, tangy citrus lemon taste.

Otherwise, the flavors that define this jerky starts mostly with the chile pepper flavor, but gives way to the stronger natural meat flavor. It ends up resembling a pepper fried steak with healthy dose of red chile pepper sprinkled on. There's also a light fatty taste mixed into the steak flavor to create a more beefy, meaty experience. Towards the latter part of chewing, I can detect the garlic and salt.

The level of heat in this sits at a medium level on my personal heat scale (level 3 out of 5). It produces a light amount of moisture on my scalp.

The meat consistency seems great, easy to chew, but maintaining a jerky chewiness and a clearly recognizable feel of steak. It's largely dry, but retaining a light bit of moisture. There's bits and streaks of fat on these pieces that add to the overall flavor. Once chewed down soft, it feels just like a piece of steak.

Verdict: This "Limon Con Chile" variety of Carne Seca from People's Choice is equally as good as their Limon variety, but adds the flavor of chile pepper and a medium level of heat. The saltiness tends to feel stronger than the Limon variety, but I think it feels that way due to the heat. Otherwise, the peppery, lightly fatty, steak flavor in this makes for an awesome jerky, along with the easy, but meaty, and steak-like chewing texture.

  1. I think this brand of jerky has a great taste. I have had limon, con chile and limon con chile. I also like the fact that there are no added nitrates.
