The Patriot Brands Beef Jerky - Carolina Reaper Freedom Fire

the patriot brands jerky
The Patriot Brands Beef Jerky is a new brand that launched in February of 2018 by James Napier of Cuba, MO. The company also markets a line of hot sauces under the same brand.

Napier seems well-known and well-liked by many as a patriot with his beard dyed red, white, and blue. The name "Patriot Brands" stems from his overwhelming support of the United States and the people who have fought for it. He's associated with "The Patriot Church", a congregation also based out of Cuba, MO.

Claiming this will, "it will light a Fire within your soul", the company describes this Carolina Reaper Freedom Fire variety as being made from their own hot sauce of the same name.

Ingredients

Beef, BBQ jerky seasoning, Carolina Reaper hot sauce, sodium nitrite

Review

The first taste that hits the tongue is the Carolina Reaper flavor. The heat comes on right away, and strong. There's a light sweet, along with touches of salt and seasonings. The chewing brings on the natural meat flavors, along with a slightly increased salt. The Carolina Reaper flavor becomes more defined further into the chewing. I can also detect light levels of smoke, and an occasional burst of celery seed.

For being marketed as a Carolina Reaper variety, this jerky delivers a lot of flavor, and a lot of heat too, though the heat is still toned down considering these are currently the world's hottest chile peppers. It's hot, and will definitely light you up with a blood warming and some scalp sweating, but I expected this to be far more hot, more painful hot, more like restless leg syndrome hot. Instead, the level of heat in this is more consistent with Habanero beef jerky.

Otherwise, the primary taste profile is a lightly savory, moderately salty, Carolina Reaper hot sauce base, with a strong Carolina Reaper pepper flavor. You get a lot of heat in this, enough to open up your glands and membranes, but still not close to the seething scald that other brands of Carolina Reaper jerky will deliver.

These are thick slices of beef, soft, tender, and slightly moist. It starts out meaty, somewhat rubbery, but eventually chews down into something steak-like. I do see some pieces with light fatty streaks, and I did encounter some unchewable tissues, but overall good.

Verdict

This Carolina Reaper Freedom Fire beef jerky from The Patriot Brands has a strong, intense flavor of Carolina Reaper chiles in all of its piquant, earthy, and floral goodness. You also get quite a good dosing of burn too, though technically it's rather toned down for something that's expected to be suicidal hot. Still, it's hot enough to produce a bead of sweat on the brow and maybe even hot enough for you to reach for a pint of Ben & Jerry's. But where the heat is not quite up to par for a Carolina Reaper, the flavor more than makes up. Better yet, the soft, steak-like chewing will have you work through this long enough to extract all the flavor before swallowing. If you want more of the Carolina Reaper flavor than the heat, this makes an excellent choice.

Rating: Good (4/5)
