The Patriot Brands Beef Jerky - Outlaw Western

the patriot brands jerky
The Patriot Brands Beef Jerky is a new brand that launched in February of 2018 by James Napier of Cuba, MO. The company also markets a line of hot sauces under the same brand.

Napier seems well-known and well-liked by many as a patriot with his beard dyed red, white, and blue. The name "Patriot Brands" stems from his overwhelming support of the United States and the people who have fought for it. He's associated with "The Patriot Church", a congregation also based out of Cuba, MO.

This "Outlaw Western" flavor is described by the company as, "...a great smoke filled flavor that is nearly perfect", going on to say that it's "blended with a touch of Chipotle", and that it will steal your memories of other Western flavors.

Ingredients

Beef, sweet chipotle seasoning, trehalose, dehydrated bell pepper, garlic powder, grill powder, natural mesquite smoke flavor, citric acid, vinegar, sodium nitrite

Review

The first flavors that hit the tongue is a light smoke and salt. Some seasoning flavors start rolling in, particularly black pepper, along with a light vinegar. The chewing brings on a meaty flavor, more comparable to cured meat.

For being marketed as Western style, it does have a flavor reminiscent of the Old West, particularly in its light smoke and salt profile, and its black pepper seasoning. The chipotle seasonings remain light, however, as is the grill powder, yet manages to help color the overtones.

Otherwise, the primary taste profile is a cured natural meat flavor, lightly smoked and salted, with light seasonings of black pepper and touches of vinegar. Think of it as a seasoned summer sausage flavor.

The meat consistency shows a fair amount of fat and gristle, yet doesn't get in the way too much. I do, however, find some stringiness. Otherwise, it chews easy enough, and takes on a meaty, steak-like chewing texture. It's a dry jerky in handling, yet chews lightly moist.

Verdict

This Outlaw Western variety from The Patriot Brands Jerky certainly does deliver a western style flavor and chewing for its light smoke, salt and black pepper profile, along with its meaty, steak-like chewing texture, but it also adds touches of chipotle and vinegar to add some creativity. Otherwise, it's just classic jerky architecture using only manly seasonings that emphasize the taste and texture of pure beef goodness. While the meat consistency in this sample tended to go bit much in fat and gristle, it was still pleasant and satisfying in chewing. And though it handles dry, it still chews tender and slightly moist. Overall, it's a unique homage to the cowboy style of dried meats.
