Krave Beef Jerky is a brand owned by Krave Pure Foods, Inc. based out of Sonoma, CA. It started in 2011 by Jon Sebastiani, who got started in the food business working on his family's winery in Sonoma.
This Pineapple Orange beef jerky is described by the company's as being, "a Hawaiian-inspired offering of tender top round sirloin domestic beef marinated in a blend of sweet orange, pineapple and tropical fruit. Slices are carefully baked to preserve their unique flavor of sweetness and acidity, making an exceptionally moist and addictive combination."
Beef, evaporated cane syrup, low sodium gluten free soy sauce, water, molasses, mirin, soybean oil, pineapple juice, orange juice, spices, sea salt, pineapple juice powder, orange juice powder, celery juice powder.
There's an immediate fruity flavor that comes in quick, which soon emerges into orange, but also reveals the pineapple. There's just a touch of saltiness mixed in. The chewing brings out a bit more sweetness, and faint amounts of natural meat flavor.
For being labeled as "Pineapple Orange", it definitely does generate this flavor, but it doesn't really knock out the tangy, vibrant qualities pineapple and orange are known for. It's more like the flavors of pineapple and orange, but in a mild, softened state.
Otherwise, the flavors that define this jerky starts mainly with the flavor of pineapple and orange, in a more sweetened state, and a light bit of saltiness. I don't really pick up much of the other ingredients, aside from the light saltinesss.
For the most part, it's a very mild tasting jerky, perhaps great for kids getting into jerky snacking.
The meat consistency reveals some light bits of stringiness, and touches of mushy chew. Otherwise, it chews like a softened steak, almost comparable to pot roast. I don't see much of any fat on this.
Verdict: This Pineapple Orange variety from Krave Beef Jerky lives up to its billing, dishing out a flavor that tastes like a combination of pineapple and orange, in a more sweetened state, but without the tangy, puckery, citrusy characteristics. Aside from the light saltiness, and touches of natural meat flavor, there isn't much else this jerky offers. It turns out to be rather mild and bland.
