The newest offering from Jeff's Famous Jerky is this Honey Jalapeno Bacon Jerky. Read our previous reviews of Jeff's Famous Jerky.

Jeff's Famous Jerky is led by Jeff Richards of Mission Viejo, CA. Jeff has been making beef jerky since the 1970s. His love for cooking took him into the restaurant business for over 20 years. In 2006 he started working on creating his own beef jerky brand, and just last year saw the launch of his new company.

This Honey Jalapeno Bacon Jerky is described as having been 5-years in the making, said to be crisp like real bacon but without all the grease.

Ingredients

Bacon, powdered sugar, jalapenos, honey, ground jalapeno

Taste

The first thing I taste from the surface of these strips is a heavy sweetness mixed with a smoky, bacon-like goodness. Moments later, the heat from the jalapeno comes in, along with a light jalapeno flavor.

The chewing flavor brings in a more defined bacon flavor and saltiness.

For being marketed as a Honey Jalapeno Bacon Jerky, it seems to fit the bill quite well. I get a lot of sweet with a light honey flavor as well as a fair amount of heat and light jalapeno flavor. The bacon flavor, of course, is well-defined. It chews somewhat like jerky, but more like actual bacon.

Otherwise, the flavors that define this jerky is largely the heavy sweet honey with the classic, smoky, salty, bacon flavor falling in behind. The jalapeno flavor is light, adding a touch of flavor.

As far as the heat goes, the jalapeno adds an overall mild-medium (level 2 out of 5) level of burn on my personal heat scale. Others with lower tolerances might see it as a little more hot.

The bacon flavor is very much like the same classic, honest-to-goodness bacon flavor, just like the stuff you'd have for breakfast. It seems to have the same level of smokiness and saltiness, and even the fat has the same flavor too.

Meat Consistency

These are strips of whole bacon, sliced to the same length and thickness of standard breakfast-style bacon.

It's mostly a semi-moist, very much like fried bacon that has cooled, and has a light oily surface feel. It appears to be cooked half-way between crispy and soft. Chewing seems pretty easy.

The chewing texture starts out feeling just like biting off a strip of bacon, and chews just like one too, having a light bit of crisp when biting off a piece. The fat tends to chew down pretty quickly while the meat has the same chewiness of real bacon, no more or no less chewy just because it's sold as jerky.

The amount of fat versus meat seems exactly the same as regular bacon. I don't find any extra stringiness beyond what I'd expect from bacon.

In terms of clean eating, my fingers pick up a fair amount of oiliness, requiring a licking and wiping before touching the keyboard.

Snack Value

Jeff's Famous Jerky sells this Honey Jalapeno Bacon Jerky from it's website at a price of $20.95 for three 2oz bags plus $6.95 for fast Priority Mail shipping and handling. All purchases are shipped the same or next business day. That works out to a price of $4.65 per ounce.

For general jerky snacking purposes, at the $4.65 per ounce price, it's a decent value. I get a lot of snackability for an excellent overall flavor, good meat consistency and good chewing texture. That price is comparably priced to other gourmet brands of bacon jerky, and seems to offers a better overall bacon flavor and and seasonings.

As for a Honey Jalapeno Bacon Jerky, at the same $4.65 per ounce, it's a decent value as well. I get a good deal of sweet with a noticeable honey flavor along with a light level of heat and jalapeno taste.

Rating

I'm giving this a best rating.

This Honey Jalapeno Bacon Jerky from Jeff's Famous Jerky packs a lot of flavor in the form of sweet honey with good ol' classic American bacon and a touch of jalapeno heat.

It's not any more chewy just because it's sold as jerky, it actually chews the same as fried bacon, cooked half-way between crispy and soft, but cooled off for awhile.

Otherwise, I found an initial heavy dose of honey sweetness that parts way into the great taste of smoky, salty, bacon with a touch of jalapeno heat and flavor to give it that little bit of "oomph". Just as the company says, it's not overly greasy, and actually does have a light bit of crisp to it when biting.

You could certainly snack your way into a few bags of this jerky before you'd know it.
