Lawless Jerky Teams with The Phoenix Suns SixthMan Members and St. Vincent de Paul to Fight Hunger in the Phoenix Community

lawless jerky
Lawless Jerky, the Phoenix-based craft jerky brand known for its world-inspired "Braver Flavors™," has made its largest charitable donation to date. To mark National Jerky Day and celebrate the company's Arizona roots, Lawless Jerky donated 24,870 bags of jerky to St. Vincent de Paul, the prominent Arizona charitable organization.

Today, Lawless Jerky also will team up with the Phoenix Suns SixthMan Members and St. Vincent de Paul to prepare, serve and enjoy a meal alongside hundreds of local Phoenix families in need.

Lawless Jerky Founder and CEO Matt Tolnick spearheaded the donation and community support initiative: "Lawless Jerky is proudly made in Arizona. The Phoenix community is our manufacturing home and we are fortunate to be surrounded by loyal and hardworking employees and business partners from the Phoenix area."

"We are grateful to the community and want to provide everyone here access to a nutritious, high-protein, and delicious snack. To do this alongside community stalwarts like the Phoenix Suns fans and St. Vincent de Paul, who have impacted this community for generations, is an honor. We aim to follow in their sizable footsteps," continued Tolnick.

After founding Lawless Jerky in Santa Monica, Calif. in 2013, Tolnick struggled to find an ideal manufacturing base. After a thorough search, he settled on Phoenix for its growth potential and high quality of life.

"As head of product development and jerky chef at Lawless Jerky, I spend an increasing amount of time in Phoenix and will personally relocate here this summer," said Tolnick. "The city is flourishing and has plenty of untapped potential. People love living in Phoenix and are passionate about supporting local businesses. With this donation, we aim to celebrate deep roots in Phoenix."

About The Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Each year, St. Vincent de Paul provides approximately 10,000,000 meals to people in need, in addition to a wide array of life services including employment counseling and placement, medical and dental services, and the provision of clothing and food.

Jerry Castro, Director of Food Services at St. Vincent de Paul, has been a leader within the organization for nearly 30 years: "We are fortunate to have the support of the Phoenix Suns for quite some time."

"When Lawless Jerky came to visit us earlier this year, there was an immediate mutual respect and connection. Though new to our community, Matt Tolnick and the Lawless Jerky team have an obvious commitment to be strong corporate citizens here. We at St. Vincent de Paul welcome Lawless Jerky to our home with open arms."

Lawless Jerky's donation of 24,870 bags of jerky marks the number of years that each of the participants have called Phoenix home: two years for Lawless Jerky, 48 years for the Phoenix Suns, and 70 years for St. Vincent de Paul.

The impact this sizable donation will be felt throughout the state of Arizona, as Lawless Jerky bags will be packed into shelf stable meals and delivered to the 83 conferences maintained throughout the state by St. Vincent de Paul. Collectively, over 500,000 grams of 100% grass-fed protein will be distributed.

"Food insecurity in the United States, particularly among children, is a much more significant problem than most people realize," said Dr. Madelyn Fernstrom, a national health and wellness expert and the Health and Nutrition Editor for NBC News and the TODAY Show on NBC. "Nutrition that the most vulnerable members of our society receive is often devoid of quality protein, so Lawless Jerky's donation is particularly meaningful. High quality beef jerky is a healthy, tasty, and satisfying snack in between meals, and I’m sure the donation will be very much appreciated."

For more information on Lawless Jerky, please visit http://www.lawlessjerky.com. Arizona residents can now find Lawless Jerky in local Bashas’ and Sprouts Farmers Markets. To see a full list of stores where Lawless Jerky is available, please click here.

Braaitime is a brand of gourmet cured meats based out of Keansburg, NJ. The company was started in 2005 by Warren Pala. Warren immigrated from South Africa in 2001 and sought to introduce Biltong to Americans.

Warren claims to be the only brand of biltong holding true to the old world methods. "All other makers of Biltong have followed the 'jerky' method in order to achive USDA approval. They cook the meat to a certain temperature for a certain amount of time". Warren was able to get USDA approval with the help of local Italians who had already convinced USDA inspectors that their prosciutto & capacolo are shelf stable.

Similar to jerky in description, but tasting very much different, it's traditionally seasoned with vinegar, coriander, black pepper, and salt. This Christmas beef jerky is named as such because in New Mexico, people are often asked to choose between red or green chiles. When they want both, they answer with, "Christmas". And that's supposedly what this beef jerky is about.

Jedidiah's Beef Jerky - Cowboy

jedidiahs jerky
Billed as one of the company's top selling varieties, this Cowboy style from Jedidiah's Beef Jerky is meant to be a throwback to the old days of campfire cooking, saddle sores, and pesky indians. Jedidiah's Jerky was started by David Coffey, a veteran of the beef jerky business, having taken his first bite of the industry in 1984, when he went to work for Polley's Beef Jerky. In 2005, he went to work for himself by starting Jedidiah's Jerky. Based out of Beatty, NV, Coffey also runs a chain of beef jerky outlets called, "Jed's Jerky", with locations throughout Nevada and California.

This "Cowboy Style" is more of a man's jerky, made with no added sugar, just simple seasonings and strong dose of cracked black pepper corns.

Crazy Horse Jerky - Million Dollar Bacon Jerky

crazy horse jerky
Crazy Horse Jerky recently developed their own Bacon Jerky. They sent us a sample for review.

Unlike other bacon jerky brands, Crazy Horse uses thick chunks of bacon opposed to thin strips. They use a hickory smoked bacon from a local butcher, cut into bite-sized chunks, then smother it with their blend of sweet & spicy seasonings. To finish it off, it's baked in a convection oven.

Crazy Horse Jerky is based out of Hellam, PA, run by Dave Wenrich and Cara Wenrich. The brand is known for its real wood smoked jerky, smoked in an old walk-in smoker, hand-crafted and small-batched in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country.

Lehigh Biltong

lehigh biltong
Lehigh Biltong is a new brand that got started in September 2015 by Dan Levy, based out of Bethlehem, PA. Levy, who grew up in England from South African parents, had always loved biltong. But when he moved to the United States, it was hard to find.

After becoming frustrated with paying high prices for biltong and waiting weeks on delivery, Levy decided to make his own.

Now a senior at Lehigh University, he balances his studies in Mechanical Engineering and running his new biltong brand. He uses antibiotic-free beef, along with the usual ingredients of salt, vinegar, coriander, and black pepper, but throws in a kick of Old Bay seasoning.
