"Exclusive Black Label" is different from their existing line of turkey jerky in that it's made from turkey raised without added hormones or antibiotics, and is gluten-free.
The Exclusive Black Label line includes the same four flavors already available in their existing turkey jerky lineup, Original, Sweet & Spicy, Teriyaki, and Hot & Bothered. The Original variety of this Exclusive Black Label line doesn't include the worcestershire sauce that's used in the Turkey Perky Jerky, (see our original review).
Original: Turkey breast, soy sauce, brown sugar, lemon juice, garlic powder, pepper, guarana.
The first thing I taste from the surface of these pieces is a strong sweetness and a light soy sauce.
The chewing brings in some black pepper and touches of garlic. The soy sauce strengthens and increases definition. I can also pick up the natural turkey meat flavors.
Comparing the Original variety of the Exclusive Black Label versus the regular Turkey Perky Jerky, the Exclusive Black Label has a slightly stronger, more defined soy sauce flavor. The Exclusive Black Label also seems slightly less sweet.
The exclusion of worcestershire in the Original variety also seems to make the Exclusive Black Label just a touch less tangy. But the converse of that is that the Exclusive Black Label tends to bring out the natural turkey meat flavors a little more.
Overall, the Original variety of both the Exclusive Black Label and the regular Turkey Perky Jerky are still very similar tasting. I think aficionados of turkey jerky will probably prefer the Exclusive Black Label for the sharper natural turkey meat flavor and slightly less sweet.
Compared to the regular Turkey Perky Jerky, the Exclusive Black Label is definitely more tender. Perky Jerky is already a rather moist, tender jerky to begin with, yet this Exclusive Black Label is even more so.
The regular Turkey Perky Jerky has a shiny surface while the Exclusive Black Label has a dull surface. As a result, the Exclusive Black Label tends to chew more like real turkey meat, while the regular tends to have a little gummy chewing quality. The regular is also a little more oily to touch and taste than compared to the Exclusive Black Label.
Overall, the Exclusive Black Label is noticeably different than the regular Turkey Perky Jerky being more moist and tender, chewing more like real turkey meat, and being less oily. Those qualities, I believe, seem to enhance the natural meat flavor.
Perky Jerky says this Exclusive Black Label will begin shipping this month. I haven't yet seen it in stores, and the company's website still doesn't mention the availability of this product. I don't know if Perky Jerky plans to sell this Exclusive Black Label at the same price as its regular turkey jerky.
I'm giving this a best rating.
This Exclusive Black Label from Perky Jerky, with respect to the Original variety, seems like a significant improvement over the company's regular turkey jerky. This actually chews and feels like real turkey breast meat, and is actually more soft and tender than the regular. It doesn't have the lightly gummy chewing that the regular has, and even has a more noticeable turkey meat flavor. It's also less oily than the regular.
The Exclusive Black Label tends to have a slightly less tangy flavor than the regular, I think due to the exclusion of the worcestershire ingredient. But I think that helps the natural meat flavor become more noticeable. Overall, I think jerky aficionados will appreciate the more meat-like chewing texture, and the natural turkey meat flavor of the Exclusive Black Label.
And to top it all off, the Exclusive Black Label is gluten-free and made from turkeys with no added hormones and antibiotics.
