Buffalo Bill's Jerky - Beer Jerky

buffalo bills jerky
Recently, Buffalo Bill's Jerky released a new flavor, "Beer Jerky". It's beef jerky marinated in honey brown ale. They sent me a package for review. These are their 12.5oz package of strips, instead of 3.5oz/16oz pieces.

Beef jerky marinated in beer is not a new concept, it's been done before. But often companies use a cheap, light beer, like Coors Light, which itself is very watery. But of course, beer is not a cheap ingredient either. I'm assuming this honey brown ale will be heavier on malt than the fizzy yellow watery stuff other brands have used.

Buffalo Bills Jerky is a brand of Choo Choo R Snacks, based out of Lebanon, PA. They've been around since 1990, and were one of the first brands we reviewed on Best Beef Jerky.

According to the company, this variety was inspired by "bulgogi", a Korean-style BBQ, this recipe comes from the Korean mother of one of Eden's friends. It's not spicy, like some bulgogi can be, but more of a rich, sweet flavor. It's smoked using real apple wood.

Jonty Jacobs - Biltong (Traditional Cut)

jonty jacobs biltong
Jonty Jacobs is a brand of Biltong and Droewors based out of Brooklyn, NY. It was launched by South African-born Australian, Monique Daniels, who moved to the United States and discovered a lack of quality biltong.

Biltong is a type of dried, seasoned sliced meat, very much like jerky, but with a more specific method of curing and drying. Whereas jerky is marinated for several hours and often dehydrated in smokers and ovens, biltong is rubbed with salt and vinegar and dried at room temperature for several days, resulting in a more tender, aged flavor.

Jonty Jacobs brand of biltong is made in the USA in a USDA inspected facility. They offer two types of Biltong, this Traditional cut, which leaves more of the fat on, and a "Lean Cut", which we reviewed last week. Jonty Jacobs also sells its own seasoning blend separately, encouraging you to sprinkle a bit more for additional kick.
