Ed's Roadhouse Jerky - Devil's Tongue

Ed's Roadhouse Jerky - Devil's TongueEd's Roadhouse Jerky has a new variety out now called "Devil's Tongue". See my previous review of their "Lil Sweet Jalapeno Habanero".

At the time, that Lil Sweet Jalapeno Habanero was their hottest offering, but this new "Devil's Tongue" variety is supposed to be hotter yet. From their description it also includes a blend of jalapeno and habanero chiles, but they describe it with four x's (XXXX) instead of the three x's (XXX) that the Lil Sweet variety got.

Ed's Roadhouse Jerky is a small family run business out of Buffalo Grove, IL. He got started about 20 years ago. Ed Herman, the owner, claims that each package of jerky you buy is made to order, opposed to being pulled off the shelf, guaranteeing freshness.

Ingredients

Angus beef eye of round, fresh habanero & jalapenos, water, garlic, salt, sugar, soybean, wheat salt, natural flavoring spices, molasses, pepper extract.

Taste

The first thing I taste from the surface of these pieces is a light sweetness, followed by a strong chile pepper flavor, with a decent burn starting to build. I can taste some saltiness. Overall, there is a lot of surface flavor.

In the chewing, I taste a good deal of natural meat flavors, and a light bit of soy sauce.

For being described "Hot as Hell", I'd say that it certainly warrants the word "hot". But I'd rate it on my hot scale as being medium-hot. Honestly, I think it has a similar level of burn as the Lil Sweet Jalapeno Habanero, maybe a little more. But I don't think it's quite hot enough to get above medium-hot on my scale. Keep in mind that I've built up a tolerance for this stuff; your tongue may vary.

But as I said above, I can taste the chile pepper flavors on the surface of these pieces. So I end up getting both the burn and flavor of chiles, which makes a chile pepper lover like me happy.

The natural meat flavors are very evident in this. I can taste them right away as I start chewing. Like with the Lil Sweet Jalapeno Habanero variety I reviewed earlier, this meat has a fatty flavor, characteristic of the marbilization easily seen in this jerky. It's has a flavor that a well-marbilized steak would give you.

The saltiness in this seems medium.

Overall, what you're going to taste mostly is the natural meat flavors, which seem to last throughout the chewing. But off the surface of these pieces you'll notice a light sweet, and a good deal of chile pepper flavor. When you start chewing, the meat flavors take over, while the surface flavors mix in. Half-way through the chewing the surface flavors fade away, and a light soy sauce flavor becomes more noticeable.

Meat Consistency

These are bite sized pieces of whole meat, sliced thin.

This is a dry jerky, slightly crispy, though still being soft overall. Tearing a piece apart with my fingers is very easy, though the bite-sizes don't require any tearing. It's easy to chew as well.

The chewing texture overall has a meaty quality in that it has a fibrous feel, but not necessarily steak-like. There a crumbly character to it, perhaps due to being sliced thin, and slightly crispy. But when I sucked on a piece for a long time, it eventually took on a more steak-like chewing texture, though still not totally. It doesn't have the gummy quality that I described the Lil Sweet Jalapeno Habanero as having.

There's a good deal of fat marbilization on these pieces, however I didn't find any chunks of fat. I didn't encounter any gristle or tendon, and no stringy sinews.

Clean eating-wise, this jerky doesn't leave any residue on my fingers, and doesn't drop any fragments on my lap or desk.

Snack Value

Ed's Roadhouse Jerky sells all of their jerky varieties from its website at a price of $3.75 for a 2oz package. They also tack on $5.75 for shipping. If you can buy one pound of their jerky, in different varieties, it'll cost you $35.75. That works out to a price of $2.24 per ounce.

For general jerky snacking purposes, at the $2.19 price per ounce, this provides a good value. I'm getting a lot of snackability from it's excellent overall flavor, high flavor intensity, and easy eating. The $2.19 price per ounce is on the high side, but not as high as other jerky brands I've reviewed, but I think this jerky delivers a lot of all-purpose snack value.

As a hot jerky flavored with jalapeno and habanero chiles, at the $2.19 price per ounce, it's an excellent value. I'm getting a great deal of chile burn, and a good deal of chile flavor. It definitely stands up to it's billing as a hot jerky, but it's not so hot that you can't eat it. In fact, I can enjoy a good deal of burn, but not have to pause in between pieces, and that let's me enjoy the jerky's great flavor.

Rating

I'm giving this a best rating.

This Devil's Tongue variety from Ed's Roadhouse Jerky starts by giving you a good deal of natural meat flavors, similar to a marbilized steak flavor, but throws in a lot of chile pepper burn and chile pepper flavor, creating a flavor-rich snack for meat lovers and chile lovers.

I thought the meat consistency was good, in that it made for increased snackability. That is, the bite-size of this jerky, and it's easy chewing, allows me to feed pieces into my mouth like a conveyor belt, so that I can experience the flavor non-stop. You can go through a bag of this jerky like a bag of potato chips, and in fact build up an intense burn more quickly.

Although, I do like a jerky that I can tear apart and give me a steak-like chewing texture.

Still, I thought the flavor of this Devil's Tongue variety to be excellent, mostly because of the natural meat flavors, and the chile pepper flavors, more so than the chile pepper burn.

I'd recommend a smooth creamy stout to go with this.

With a name like Devil's Tongue, you KNOW you are in for something special. Very appropriate name, if you like hot stuff, this is the jerky for you! I gave my dad a piece and had a good laugh when he turned red with beads of sweat :) Very good flavor, very good bite as if from the devil himself! For those of you who can't take the heat, might I recommend a glass of milk standing by?

I have yet to have jerky from Ed's Roadhouse that wasn't fresh, and that hasn't driven it home. I had a craving for jerky the other night and I finished off my stash from Ed's Roadhouse and haven't had a chance to order any yet, so I stopped at a gas station for some jerky. Wow, I won't make that mistake or set myself up for that disappointment again. When I got home I immediately placed my order. Don't make the same mistake I made, order when running low, not when you are out and have the crave :(

We just received our package from Ed's Roadhouse & there is something for everyone. My husband loves the heat, he had tried the lil sweet jalapeno already & really liked it, but the Devil's Tongue made him catch his breath a little. The Devil's Tongue has a great jerky hot hotness, if you like the heat, this is what you are looking for. My daughters really love the regular Teriaki & the Sweet Black Pepper, they grab their bag & hide it from everyone. I love the Ginger Teriaki, it has that really fresh ginger taste with a little bite to it. We also tried some of the other products, such as the BBQ Sauce & the Steak Sauce, they are awesome as well. Ed's Roadhouse products arrived very fresh (tender & moist), with instructions to refrigerate to keep the freshness (if they last that long)& we will be ordering agian very soon.

After reading reviews on this site, I ordered Ed's roadhouse jerky for my brother who is in Iraq. He did a taste test of the flavors with some of the guy's in his unit and no one could pick a favorite. They liked all of the flavors. My brother did by say he loved the Devil's tongue the best.
